CostMe shows you one number that grows every time you say no to a buy. It is called your lifetime savings. This guide explains what it means and how to read it without fooling yourself.

What the number is

Your lifetime savings is the total of every price you chose not to spend. Each time you resist a purchase or let a vault item go, the app adds that price to the total.

Skip a $60 shirt, the number goes up $60. Skip a $1,000 phone upgrade, it jumps $1,000. Over weeks and months, it builds into a number you can be proud of.

What it is not

Be honest with yourself here. The lifetime savings number is the money you did not spend. It is not money sitting in a bank account unless you actually move it there.

This is the one trap. If you resist a $60 shirt but then spend that $60 on takeout, you did not really save it. The number is a measure of your good choices, not your bank balance. To make it real, move the saved money somewhere it can grow. (See saving vs investing.)
